Spring 2014 Online Semester

Eight-week Spring 2014 Semester starts Monday, March 10, 2014, with self-directed alternate schedules to meet individual student needs. Classes last eight weeks, and end the week of  April 28.

Online classes (for credit or noncredit) with the San Francisco Institute of Architecture (SFIA), are designed for working professionals and students at all levels. Classes include video presentations of best practices by leading green experts. Free textbook downloads are also included.

Online classes with downloadable videos and text provide convenient low-cost education for those pursuing self-paced, independent study, group study, and/or office staff member instruction.

3-unit academic classes: $350 credit; $175 noncredit.  Tuition must be paid in full by March 10, 2014. All classes can be upgraded to credit later with added payment and submission of coursework.

“For-credit” students earn Certificates of Achievement and credit toward Bachelor or Master Degrees in Architecture or Green Building.

Online classes are open to all, U.S. and international. There are no prerequisites, entrance exams, or extra fees.

ONLINE CLASSES

Downloadable classes will be available starting Monday, March 10, 2014, and continue weekly through Thursday, May 1. The schedule is flexible, and you can set or extend the schedule any way you want.

Each class will require about one hour of lecture time and two hours’ course work each week. Study materials will be delivered to your email address each week, and Facebook discussion groups will be open for each class.

Monday lecture and readings for download. The secrets of the world’s most creative architects. Immensely valuable, whether you’re well experienced or a newby. Four short problem-solving design assignments provide clear, step-by-step instructions for site and climate analysis, needs analysis and building planning, selecting the best construction methods, and the best green power, heating, and cooling systems.

Class starts Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

Tuesday lecture and readings for download. Some of the finest designers of our time show what they do and how they do it. Earn your grade by carrying their ideas forward in your own thinking, by providing visual collage and/or written feedback. Featuring video presentations by Eugene Tsui, Glenn Small, Douglas Cardinal, James Hubbell, Bart Prince, and the late Bruce Goff.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT GREEN: HOW FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT THOUGHT, SOLVED PROBLEMS, AND PIONEERED THE ART AND SCIENCE OF GREEN BUILDING

Class starts Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

Tuesday lecture and readings for download. Most presentations and writings about Frank Lloyd Wright have very little to say about his methods of design and why his buildings are the way they are. For those who want to learn architectural design, there is no better source.

HAZARDS OF TOXIC MATERIALS AND HOW TO CREATE HEALTHY BUILDINGS

3 units. 8 weeks. $350 credit; $175 noncredit.
Class starts Wednesday, March 12, 2014.

Wednesday lecture and readings for download. Common toxins in buildings make people sick, dysfunctional, and even mentally compromised. This class includes shocking warnings from medical studies and the latest life-enhancing information on how to use buildings to improve human health.

Wednesday lecture and readings for download. Videos and other online presentations show the best methods and best results of vegetative roofs and walls.

3 units. 8 weeks. $350 credit; $175 noncredit.
Class starts Thursday, March 13, 2014.

Thursday lecture and readings for download. The techniques and technology for creating electricity for home, office, and vehicles, with minimum payback time. And once paid for, how to enjoy virtually free electric power for 50 years or more to come.

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND METHODS

3 units. 8 weeks. $350 credit; $175 noncredit.
Class starts Thursday, March 13, 2014.

Thursday lecture and readings available for download. Two sections: 1) Earth and Earth-Sheltered Buildings, and 2) Strawbale and Bamboo Construction, four weeks each.

All classes can be upgraded to credit later with added payment and submission of coursework.
