New classes start the week of June 16, 2008.

Classes are to be held in West Berkeley, California.
90 Bolivar Drive at Aquatic Park, a couple of blocks south
of University Ave.

We're now at our new facility at Aquatic Park in Berkeley (a great eco retrofit

opportunity), with a great lineup of speakers and teachers for the months ahead,

including Paul Kephart on Green Roofs; Laura Allen on Greywater;

Craig Henritzy on Indigenous Design; John Swearington

on Strawbale Design and Construction; Todd Jersey on Green Building Design

and Construction; Dave Weir on the amazing graphic power of SketchUp;

Eric Corey Freed on The Practice of Organic Architecture; and Fred Stitt

on Everything Eco; and Building Failures and Structural Engineering.

Future classes will include Richard Register of Eco Cities;

David Deppen
, Architect, on Designing with Site and Sun; and

Jay Baldwin, Inventor, on Bucky Fuller and Nature-Based Design Process.

MONDAY CLASSES

E-50 EVERYTHING ECO GREEN BUILDING WORKSHOP

3 units. (6 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks.
Mondays, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m.
Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect; Director, SFIA.

A complete overview of green building design, focusing on

alternative environmental and energy systems:

  • New, Alternative Materials and Construction Methods
  • Free Solar Heating and Cooling
  • Natural Lighting
  • Building Integrated Power Systems
  • Free electricity
  • Harvesting Rain
  • Bioremediation & Site Remediation
  • Creating completely self-sufficient buildings
Includes numerous case studies of today's greatest innovations

in green building.

E-200 GREEN BUILDING CERTIFICATION

3 units (6 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks.
Mondays, 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect; Director, SFIA.

How to prepare for revolutionary new career paths in green

building.

Soon most of the Bay Area and major cities across

the U.S. will mandate green certification for all new and

remodeled buildings (including residential). These cities will

require Certified Green Building Professionals to assure that

green standards are met. This course explains the fundamentals

of the certification systems, with an emphasis on understanding

and preparinG for the LEED-Accredited Professional exam.

For the first time it's possible for non-architects to enter the

architecture profession starting as Certified Green Building

Professionals. Those who do so and work under the supervision

of architects will accrue work experience that counts toward

qualifying for the California architecture license exam.

TUESDAY CLASSES

T-1.2 CAUSES AND PREVENTION OF BUILDING FAILURES

3 units. (6 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks.
Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.
Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect; Director, SFIA.

Buildings failures are epidemic, despite the fact that the causes are

well known and easily corrected. This course outlines the exact

reasons why materials, buildings, and design professionals fail.

  • The number-one cause of most building failures
  • Designing for wind and fire
  • Designing for earthquakes
  • Soil failures and landslides
  • Killer toxic building materials
  • Roof and facade failures
  • Building accidents and injuries

DE-250 ECO RETROFIT FOR SFIA

3 units. (6 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks.
Tuesdays, 8:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.
Instructors: Fred Stitt and guest consultants.

How to problem solve, plan, and design the transformation of

existing buildings into showcase green environments.

Using our new facility as a case study, we'll review the most

creative possibilities of solar energy, daylighting, green roof

and green walls, green ceilings, passive solar heating, greywater

reclamation, interior plantscaping, rainwater harvesting, air

cleansing, green finishes, and LEED and/or other types of green

building certification.

WEDNESDAY CLASSES

E-180 GREYWATER, COMPOST TOILETS, and LIVING MACHINES

3 units (6 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks.
Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.
Instructor: Laura Allen of Greywater Guerillas.

Buildings can recycle "used" water, process sewage, and instead of

being the worst polluters, can be turned around to eliminate toxic

waste, improve the environment, and enhance health. Unfortunately,

the "approved" ways of doing so are expensive and complex. Here's

how to do it safely, simply, and cheaply.

E-600 THE GREEN BUILDING REVOLUTION

3 units (6 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks.
Wednesdays, 8:00 p.m. - 9:15+ p.m.

Leading green building architects and experts tell what they do and

how they do it. A rare opportunity to gain essential insights on green

design and technology from some of the Bay Area's finest green

building design professionals.

Class starts with two weeks of Paul Kephart, Horticulturalist,

and one of the world's leading authorities on Green Roofs,

followed by Craig Henritzy, Architect, on Indigenous Design,

John Swearington, of Skillful Means, on Strawbale Design and

Construction, Todd Jersey, Architect, on Ecological Design

Practice.

THURSDAY CLASS

C-22 SKETCHUP: 3-D MODELING & DESIGN PROCESS

3 units. (6 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks.
Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:00+ p.m.
Students may stay later for lab practice.

Instructor: Dave Weir.

A comprehensive introduction to the lowest-cost and easiest-

to-use architecture computer modeling program. SketchUp

is now the leading medium for architectural perspective

renderings and presentation drawings. Software can be

downloaded at no cost. Bring your own laptop (required).

CERTIFICATION FOR GREEN

BUILDING PROFESSIONALS

Green building is about to become the most important

environmental issue of our time.

The reason: Buildings account for most energy

consumption (76%), most greenhouse gasses (48%),

most overall pollution and landfill, and much of the

increases in allergies and respiratory diseases (due to

toxic materials and bad air handling systems).

Soon virtually all publicly-funded construction and

most private construction will have to be designed

to meet green standards and be certified

by Green Building Professionals.

People qualified to design, certify, or construct

green buildings are still a small minority

in the design professions.

So the demand and opportunities for certified green

building consultants are about to explode.

You can become a Certified Green Building Professional

by completing 24 units of our design and green building

classes through the Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall terms.

Green Building Professional certification will be

through the SFIA and an accredited program of the

Berkeley Institute of Ecological Design.
