This design studio explores a wide range of Native American building traditions, principles of sustainable design, and the creative design process.

• How to fully understand and "feel" solar orientation.

• Learning from the history of the land.

• Understanding land as a living organism.

• Raising your capacity for observation and conscious awareness.

• Methods of Native American trackers.

• How to interview and learn from those who know your building site best.

90 Bolivar Drive, at Aquatic Park in Berkeley. The school is at the foot of Bancroft Avenue, where it meets the waterfront of Aquatic Park. Aquatic park is approximately three blocks south of University Avenue and the University Avenue off-ramp from highway 80 (see Google map).

Parking is available along Bolivar and on Bancroft Avenues.

SFIA's new school is in the heart of Berkeley's "Green Gulch" - an emerging green neighborhood, with a concentration of enterprises within a mile or two, including solar power companies, a biodiesel fuel station, electric car distributorship, Berkeley Eco Center, Urban Ore building recycling center, and the offices of a growing number of green architects and builders.

NEW WAYS TO ACCELERATE YOUR EDUCATION AND REDUCE EXPENSES AT SFIA:

Tuition reduction rebate. Students with perfect attendance in a class and who complete all work assignments by the end of the class will receive a $50 rebate on class tuition (or tuition credit on future classes) at the end of the semester. This rebate applies only to full-credit students.

Noncredit option. You may enroll in 3-unit classes for $200 and attend on a noncredit basis. Later you can convert your enrollment to full credit, pay the remaining tuition, and turn in the assignment work.

Credit for attending non-SFIA green building events.
You may earn additional credit for any green building workshop(s) or conference(s) that you attend at other institutions. Just show proof of attendance, and hand in a 10-page summary of the event and what you learned, to earn one unit of credit. Your transcript will show as self-inititated extra credit.

Credit for extra readings and Independent Study.
Earn 1 unit for any textbook from our recommended list that you purchase and read. Just provide a reading time record and an outline checklist summary of each chapter's content.You can also earn 3 units per course by enrolling in our Architecture or Ecological Design Distance Learning program (see SFIA.net).
