San Francisco Bay Area

 

Sunday, August 7 - Saturday, August 13, 2005

Space is limited -- first-come first-served.

Reserve early to assure your enrollment.

 

Tuition: $560 for enrollment by July 22, 2005.

After July 22, if there are any openings left, tuition will be $750.

 

Tuition includes tour transportation, seminars,
and office and site visits.
Attendees are resonsible for the costs of transportation
to the Bay Area, meals, and housing.
Instructions will be sent upon receipt of enrollment.

  

Includes visits and analyses of:

• The massive "Living Roof" of Renzo Piano's
Academy of Sciences building.

• The green San Francisco Federal Building
designed by Thom Mayne of Morphosis.

• The "Green Roof" and eco design of the Gap building
by Gensler Associates and William McDonough.

• The workshop studio of visionary architect Eugene Tsui,
author of Evolutionary Architecture.

• "The Heart of the City," urban stream daylighting project
by Richard Register, author of Eco Cities.

• Greening urban blight with "Living Libraries"
by Bonnie Sherk.

• The new reality of "bridge architecture," by the architect
of the new San Francisco Bay Bridge, Donald MacDonald.

• The future of green architecture, by Fred Stitt, editor of
the Ecological Design Handbook, and author of the upcoming
encyclopedic book, Eco Wave, for publisher W.W. Norton.

• The SF Department of the Environment and the
SF Green Buildings Initiative.

• Creating a green architectural education -- the experimental
study programs of the San Francisco Institute of Architecture.

 Partial tour attendance may be permitted in special cases.

Includes office and site visits with experts in earth and
straw bale construction, PV and passive solar energy,
bioclimatic architecture, living walls, and native plantscaping.

Plus: Self-guided, post-seminar tour options to the Bay Area's
natural wonders and buildings of the historic Bay Area tradition,
including Houseboat Communities, Sausalito; the pioneering
Village Homes of Davis, California; the regional architecture
of Bernard Maybeck, the Greene Brothers, Julia Morgan,
and Frank Lloyd Wright.

 

Three academic units can be earned by those who complete
a thesis research project based on this experience.
Up to 42 AIA/CES Health/Safety/Welfare units are available.

 

Early bird discount fee deadline extended to July 22, 2005: $560,
$750 after July 22.
Includes all field trips, visits, lectures,
and seminar meetings.

Participants will be responsible for their housing in the Bay Area,
meals, and personal incidental expenses. (Low-cost UC student
housing in Berkeley will be recommended.)

 

Note:

If any scheduled visits have to be canceled for any reason,
comparable substitute events will be provided.

You may cancel up to 7 days prior to the workshop for full refund.
Cancellations within 7 days of the tour: $150 cancellation fee.
Substitute attendees are welcome.
Withdrawal after the program begins will be charged
on a daily prorata basis, plus the $150 cancellation fee.
