WINTER 2008 CLASS LIST New six- to eight-week classes begin
Monday, Classes will be held at
NEW: A "DE" (Design/Ecology) program
of ecological design Classes in Winter, Spring and
Summer 2008 will cover 3-unit classes: $350. 5-unit studio class: $550. Payment plans can be
arranged:
MONDAY CLASSES DE-180 GREYWATER, COMPOST, and Buildings can recycle "used" water, process sewage, and instead of being the worst polluters, can be turned around to eliminate toxic waste, improve the environment and enhance health. Unfortunately, the "approved" ways of doing so are expensive and complex. Here's how to do it safely, simply, and cheaply. 3 SFIA units. (12 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks. Mondays, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. Class starts Monday, January 21. Instructors: Laura Allen of Greywater
Guerillas,
E-80 GREEN WALLS/GREEN CEILINGS Buildings are the greatest single source of human-caused greenhouse gasses released into the atmosphere, and buildings accumulate numerous toxins and pollutants within. Buildings can eliminate these gasses and pollutants and add oxygen to enhance interior and exterior air quality. Learn the theory, design, and practice of eco plantscaping, and help design exterior and interior vertical gardens at our new school facility. 3 SFIA units (12 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks. Mondays, 8:00 p.m. - 9:15+ p.m. Class starts Monday, January 21. Instructors: Landscape designers to be announced.
TUESDAY CLASSES E-200 GREEN BUILDING
CERTIFICATION: Soon most of the Bay Area and major cities across the U.S. will require green certification for all new buildings (including residential) and remodeling. These cities will require Certified Green Building Professionals to assure that green standards are met. This course explains the fundamentals of the certification systems, with emphasis on understanding and preparing for the LEED Accredited Professional exam. 3 SFIA units (12 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks. Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. Class starts Tuesday, January 22. Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect; Director, SFIA.
D-6 HISTORY OF
ARCHITECTURE: The greatest green buildings are beautiful and inspiring. Beauty is created by understanding and applying how nature designs and builds. This class shows the evolution of our concepts of nature-based beauty in great monumental buildings and the simplest indigenous structures, from Gothic cathedrals and Native American design, through the modern green skyscraper. 3 SFIA units (12 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks. Tuesdays, 8:00 p.m. - 9:15+ p.m. Class starts Tuesday, January 22. Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect; Director, SFIA.
D-13 FREEHAND DRAWING AND To understand the nature of a thing, you have to get inside it, to understand its structure and the internal interrelationships of its parts. You can do this by learning to draw, which will also enable you to make your internal ideas visible to others. Artist Betty Edwards proved years ago that anyone can learn to draw. This class follows the techniques of her books, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, and Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook (which will be the required textbooks). 3 SFIA units. 6 weeks. Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. Class starts Tuesday, January 22. Instructor: Ann Parenti, artist.
WEDNESDAY CLASSES D-4 THE ARCHITECTURAL MIND: Anyone can solve any kind of problem and enter creative activity with total confidence, once they understand the mental processes that generate new ideas. This class includes the latest discoveries on creativity, the mind, and the fundamental principles of design process, innovation, and invention. 3 SFIA units (12 AIA/CES/HSW units). 6 weeks. Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. Class starts Wednesday, January 23. Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect; Director, SFIA.
D-1 STUDIO: CREATIVE DESIGN & NATURE-BASED ARCHITECTURE: Part 2 This studio class continues and expands the techniques
demonstrated in the Fall D-1 studio (but D-1 is not a prerequisite, and this
class is open to anyone). 5 SFIA units (16 AIA/CES/HSW units). 8 weeks. Wednesdays, 8:00 p.m. - 9:15+ p.m. Class starts Wednesday, January 23. Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect; Director, SFIA.
THURSDAY CLASSES C-22 SKETCHUP: 3-D MODELING A comprehensive introduction to the lowest-cost and easiest-to-use architecture computer modeling program. SketchUp is now the leading medium for architectural perspective renderings and presentation drawings. Software can be downloaded at no cost. Bring your own laptop (required). 3 SFIA units (12 AIA/CES units). 6 weeks. Thursdays, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. Class starts Thursday, January 24. Instructor: Dave Weir.
HOME STUDY D-14 COMMUNICATING YOUR DESIGNS: Self-study video tape course created by Kirby Lockard,
Self-paced study scheduled at students' convenience. Excellent introduction to the principles and techniques of manual perspective drawing and rendering. After your enrollment, we'll arrange to deliver video tapes and work materials. Introductory video available on request from Fred Stitt, SFIA@aol.com. 3 SFIA units.
MORE HOME STUDY DISTANCE LEARNING For SFIA's comprehensive list of distance learning architecture and green building courses, see the Distance Learning pages and FAQs at www.sfia.net. Units from these degree programs are transferable to our onsite degree and certificate programs at SFIA in Berkeley, California.
CERTIFICATION FOR GREEN BUILDING DESIGN PROFESSIONALS
Green building is about to become the most important environmental issue of our time.
The reason: Buildings account for most energy consumption (76%), greenhouse gasses (48%), overall pollution and landfill, and much of the increases in allergies and respiratory diseases (due to toxic materials and bad air handling systems).
Soon virtually all publicly-funded construction and most private construction will have to be designed to meet green standards and be certified by Green Building Professionals.
People qualified to design, certify, or construct green buildings are still a small minority in the design professions.
So the demand and opportunities for Certified Green Building Professionals are about to explode.
You can become a Certified Green Building Professional by completing 24 units of our design and green building classes through the Winter/Spring/Summer 2008 terms at SFIA.
Green Building Design Professional certification will be through the SFIA and an accredited program of the Berkeley Institute of Ecological Design.
