the

Learn how Western civilization was born on the
Nile
in 2800 B.C. Now, nearly 5,000 years later,
Egypt is still a mind-boggling panorama
of ancient arts,
crafts, artifacts, and engineering.
This course covers, in detail, the religions,
geography,
politics, chronology, archaeology
and architectural wonders of this stunningly beautiful
country.
Reservations for the D-71 Egypt tour portion of
this
course must be finalized well in advance of the class.
The class starts Monday, January 10.
The optional tour is scheduled to start
Friday, February 11 and end February 25.
Estimated tour cost at this point,
including round
trip airfare, is $2,600.
Students will make their own tour reservations and

as distance learning by video tape. But course enrollment
is required in order to participate in the tour.
D-80 BUDDHIST ARCHITECTURE
Principles of Design of
Buddhist
Shrines and
Temples
3 units, $300. Mondays, 7:45 - 9:00 p.m.
Starts Monday, January 10.
Instructors: Fred Stitt and guests.
The Buddhist tradition has produced some of
the
finest art and architecture in history.
But that tradition has been diluted in modern
times,
and many of the original Buddhist design principles
that guided the great masterworks have
been lost or forgotten.
This course reviews the history, divisions,
and
current movements in Buddhism
and how to design in relationship to Buddhist culture,
from simple shrines to pagodas, to
meditation pavilions, to monastery temples.
Students will
submit graphic displays of study
of any aspect of the topic they choose.
Or students may do a Buddhist shrine design project.
E-12 GREEN WALLS
Experimental Lab - Hands On
3 units, $300. Tuesdays, 6:30 - 9:00
p.m.
Starts Tuesday, January 11. Instructors: Andy
Adams,
Associate, Anshen+Allen Architects;
and Aurora Mahassine, Tessellation, Design
Director,
Hanging Gardens Project.
Rarely has an architectural design technology
caught
on worldwide as quickly as
Green Roofs. Architects are now looking at
green facades and green walls
inside and out.
Much remains to be learned,
however,
and the means of pervasive vertical plantscaping
will be explored in detail
in this course.
This experimental laboratory workshop will
explore
and test various methods of creating
and grafting greenery, using
some interior walls at SFIA.
D-13 SKETCH PERSPECTIVE
DRAWING & RENDERING
3 units, $300. Wednesdays, 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.
Starts Wednesday, January 12.

Hand-drawn 3-D perspective is a priceless
skill
and will continue to be in high demand
regardless of computerization.
This course provides a series of step-by-step
exercises
and personal mentoring, to convey the principles of
eyeballing, structured
perspective, freehand perspective,
and sketched and formal rendering.
Includes an introduction to the workings
of
computer-drawn perspective.
T-10 UNDERSTANDING WORKING
DRAWINGS
3 units, $300. Thursdays, 6:30 - 7:45
p.m.
Starts Thursday, January 13.
Instructor: Fred Stitt.
Before you can do productive architectural work
on
CAD in an architect's office,
you need to understand what working
drawings
are all about: what they mean,
the symbols and language, standards of best
practice,
and how the work can be done
most efficiently and effectively.
This is a five-week course of lecture,
demonstration,
and quick, simple, at-home drafting exercises
that will allow you to make
sense
of the first and most important aspect
of architectural office employment.
