WINTER, 2003,

SHORT SEMESTER

Five weeks: January 13 - February 13, 2003

WS-1 PREPARATION FOR WORK STUDY

Closing the gap between formal education and preparation for professional work.

3 units. Mondays, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect.

Analysis and evaluation of your working skill levels. How offices actually work; how to prepare for employment, making a suitable portfolio of work to show. Includes vital issues of office management and employee relationships that most employees usually know nothing about.

D-2 DESIGN STUDIO TUTORIAL

5 units. Mondays, 7:40 - 9:00 p.m. Instructor: Fred Stitt.

Comprehensive and intensive design process study and practice. Includes hands-on instruction in drafting, presentation drawing, perspective, and model building.

The design building project -- a school for children from 6 to 12 years -- a nature-based, child-centered world utilizing theories of Maria Montessori and other educational reformers.

To earn 5 units, you'll be expected to do project-related study and work for a total of 8 hours weekly for 5 weeks.

D-34 CLIENTOLOGY & PATTERN LANGUAGE

The client as your first resource and inspiration for design.

3 units. Tuesdays, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Instructor: Thaddeus Kusmierski, Architect.

An exploration of the professional design process, utilizing client-centered communication and the principles of Pattern Language, as articulated by Christopher Alexander. Includes client-architect role playing and hands-on demonstrations of how to integrate clients' living patterns and values in a nature-sensitive environment.

Kusmierski, a well known Berkeley architect, has been instrumental in the preservation and restoration of Berkeley landmark buildings designed by Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck. He first learned "client-centered" design methods from the visionary architect Bruce Goff, and has consistently applied them for many years in his own practice.

D-36 DESIGNING LIVING AND LEARNING SPACES FOR KIDS

(Will be coordinated with D-2 studio, but is not required if taking that course.)

3 units. Tuesdays, 8:00 - 9:30 p.m. Instructor: Penny Burbank, Publications Director, The Independent Institute.

This course is based on four hypotheses: 1) Good architecture is good for the mind. 2) Rational architecture teaches reason. 3) Beautiful architecture teaches aesthetics. 4) Imaginative architecture rewards and opens up the senses.

This is a research course to explore everything that would be most needed and desired in new spaces for children. It's a course in defining design problems, solving them, and creating criteria for prototype design of the most desirable educational and living environments.

Participants will explore the primary problems and deficits of existing design for children, look at the best ideas currently in use, seek visionary new alternatives, and establish new standards and ideas for future design.
