D-23 ON GROWTH & FORM
3 units Seminar by Matt Fulvio.
Mondays, 6:30 - 8 pm
Six weeks: January 10 - February 4, 2000.
Fee: $320 credit, $210 noncredit.

A basis for understanding the internal organizing principals of natural growth processes. Includes readings and analysis of growth geometries and patterns from the most provocative and influential book in all of 20th century biology: On Growth & Form, by D'Arcy Thompson.

Thompson pursued life's forms mathematically whether fantastic or mundane, seeking to understand the relationship between form and function. The class will follow an abridged selection of the original book. Discussion will follow each reading to answer questions, discuss Thompson's revolutionary ideas, and consider the implications for design. Students will need to purchase a copy of On Growth & Form (widely available new and used, paperback and hardcover).

D-201 DESIGN & DESIGN PRACTICE: ON-LINE
5 units.
December 7 to February 15 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Fee $598, credit option only.

This class has started, but is still open to student enrollments. No meetings Tuesday, December 21 and 28.

Class resumes, Tuesday, January 4. Work commitment: 4 to 6 hours weekly in addition to class meetings. Schedule can vary as needed for individual students.

Students will create a project design of their choosing on-line or using any other medium of their choice and deliver project data to the instructor and other students in person and through their web site. Students will learn how to create a web page, the basics of Internet programming, how to communicate design work online verbally and graphically, and how to interact by digital video. This class will meet regularly at SFIA for in-person instruction and ongoing contact will continue on the Internet. The class will not be subject to the usual limitations of location and school schedule.

Matt Taylor's "Design- Shop" problem-solving consultation and workplace enhancing systems are used by corporations and institutions, such as General Motors, Hermann-Miller, the Federal Aeronautics Agency, Foresight Institute, and NASA.
