SUMMER 2003 COURSE LIST

Five weeks: August 9 to September 11, 2003

A new kind of program: self-paced learning at your home or office.

These classes can be taken in the San Francisco Bay area, or anywhere, through distance learning.

Our new summer courses will start with an introductory presentation on Saturday afternoon, August 9, during our Eco Wave 2003 conference at Merritt College in the Oakland-Berkeley Hills.

see "ECO WAVE 2003" at www.SFIA.net

(A video tape of the first meeting will be sent to those who cannot attend.)

The introductory session will be followed by directed, self-scheduled study with e-mail feedback, and will conclude with a final presentation meeting and summary of class results.

Coursework will require about 5 hours weekly, to earn 3 academic units.

All classes are directed by Fred Stitt, Architect,
Founder/Director of the San Francisco Institute of Architecture.

Classes

• E-8 ECOLOGICAL DESIGN TUTORIAL 3 units (Self-paced distance learning.) See above for preview date/location.

Comprehensive introduction and overview of the primary issues of Ecological Design. Includes the basic data and resources you need for a working understanding of:

1) Site-Sensitive and Bio-Climatic Design.

2) Options in Solar Energy.

3) Alternative Construction: Building with Earth.

4) Alternative Construction: Organic Building Materials.

5) Alternative Water and Waste Systems.

Through directed readings, essay questions, and design exercises, you'll learn the nature-based technology and step-by-step processes used to create ecologically sensitive and sustainable environments.

D-9 INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE 3 units (Self-paced distance learning.) See above for preview date/location.

An in-depth study of the principles and techniques of organic architecture, how the organic approach radically differs from conventional design, and how it enhances and is enhanced by ecological architecture.

Includes:

1) Questioning Authority and Reinventing Architecture.

2) Lessons from the Words and Drawings of Frank Lloyd Wright: User-Centered and Site-Sensitive Planning.

3) Using Organizing Principles, such as the Unit System and Modular Design.

4) Understanding the Nature of Materials.

5) Sources of Visionary Creativity, Visual Logic, and Visual Poetry.

Through directed readings, analysis of organic building designs, and essay questions, you'll go far beyond the limited understanding that most architects and educators have about the meaning of "organic."

The principles and techniques you learn will vastly expand your visualization and design capabilities.

D-15 ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING AND PERSPECTIVE VIDEO COURSE 3 units. Video tape, self-paced study in how to do perspective drawing.

A fast, effective way to enhance your graphic skills.

This class can be started and completed at any time, but a five-week schedule of two video-guided drawing sessions per week is recommended.

Introductory video tapes and handouts will be shipped to you upon enrollment.

D-26 DESIGNING BUILDINGS THAT WORK 3 units (Self-paced distance learning.) See above for preview date/location.

You'll be amazed at what you can learn from others' mistakes.

Becoming an expert in any type of building starts by understanding what's wrong with most buildings of that type. That requires observing exterior and interior spaces, circulation, graphics, lighting, air quality, materials, appurtenances, and details. This "problem-seeking" discovery process will put you miles ahead of most designers, who have never learned to apply such analysis to the buildings they design.

Students receive detailed Operational Analysis Checklists, visit buildings of special interest, and provide weekly summaries of their "Observations and Recommendations." Students can work alone or team up with others. Photo documentation is encouraged but not mandatory.

Besides identifying what's most wrong with selected building types, students will learn how to invent new ideas to upgrade and radically improve the design of these building types.

Requires visits to ten buildings representing five or more types of your choosing (two buildings per week). Building types can include housing, museums, stores, restaurants, shopping malls, libraries, or any others of your choice, such as medical, entertainment, educational, or office buildings.

D-36 LEARNING FROM ARCHITECTURE 3 units (Self-paced distance learning.)

Choose any period of architecture or a specific building, or building type, or architect . . . and create a written or visual summary of how the chosen work came to be and what it can teach.

Primary topics of self-study: historical origins and influences; proportioning systems used in design; construction materials and methods; social/cultural context; site relationship; and any additional issues of interest, such as economics, related arts, eco design, etc. Textbooks will be recommended for the topic you choose, or you may submit books/references for approval. You'll periodically answer a generic set of questions, to demonstrate progress in your study and assignment work.

This class can be started and completed at any time.

Instruction materials will be shipped to you upon enrollment.
