SUMMER MIND EXPANSION AT SFIA
SUMMER 2001

Six-week semester July 23 - August 30, 2001.
San Francisco classes at 555 Howard Street.

Summer Mind Expansion Enrollment Form

D-2 THE ORGANIC DESIGN PROCESS. Elizabeth Winnen & Martin Newland. 5 units. Mondays, 6:30 - 9 p.m. Starts Monday, July 23. $550.

A comprehensive design studio offered by two very talented alumni of the Frank Lloyd Wright School.

This studio introduces and explores, through weekly design projects,
principles that guide students in the process of designing everything from a teacup to a city. The principles of human scale, proportion,
modularity, grammar (design language), context integration, continuity
(plasticity), craftsmanship, democracy, sustainability, and beauty infuse an organic design process in creating an integrated whole
from many parts. In addition to theory statements, examples and
applications, attention will be given to presentation techniques and drawing, as part of the design process. Students will supply their own drafting supplies and/or model-making materials.

E-211 THE ECO ARK. Fred A. Stitt, Architect. Director, SFIA, and guests. 3 units. Tuesdays, 6:30 - 7:40 p.m. Starts Tuesday, July 24. $350.

The next steps of planning and implementation of our new SFIA barge facilities to be located on the Bay. Includes creation of presentation graphics, working drawings, and research on eco materials and equipment.

DE-301 SUPER STUDIO--THE GRAND ECO-DESIGN EXPERIMENT. Fred A. Stitt. Director, SFIA. 3 units. Tuesdays, 7:45 - 9 p.m. Starts Tuesday, July 24. $350. (Free as a continuation to previous DE-301 students.)

Experimental design in urban ecology and methods of documentation of design work for website presentation and book publication.

This course provides considerable practice in several remarkably effective and stimulating design methodologies. The first weekend (July 27 - 29) includes a Friday evening, and all-day Saturday and Sunday Design-Shop workshop at Matt Taylor's facility in Palo Alto. This workshop can be attended separately for only $50.

D-5 MIND MAPPING & BRAINSTORMING. Penny Burbank, Publications Manager, Independent Institute. 3 units. Wednesdays, 6:30 - 7:40 p.m. Starts Wednesday, July 25. $350.

Powerful tools for generating ideas, solving problems, organizing thoughts, and designing -- a world of applications, and one of the great creativity tools of all time. Students will learn how to solve any type of problem through brainstorming and mind-mapping exercises.

Guest speakers include: Julia Berger, Exhibit Developer & Science Educator; Anita Goldstein and Joy-Lily of the Brain Exchange, a Women's Brainstorming Group; Susan Yael Smith, Clarity Consulting and Coaching; Fred Stitt on design process and "self-induced" creativity; and Matt Fulvio, MArch, SFIA, on design creativity and geometry. Includes many hands-on demonstrations and varied applications of mind-mapping and brainstorming techniques.

D-30 TO DESIGN A HOUSE ... Thaddeus Kusmierski, Architect. 4 units. Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Starts Thursday, July 26. $450.

A focused exploration of the professional design process, utilizing
client-centered communication and the principles of Pattern Language, as articulated by Christopher Alexander. Includes client-architect role playing and hands-on demonstrations of how to integrate clients' living patterns and values in a nature-sensitive environment.

Thaddeus Kusmierski is a well-known, respected Berkeley architect who has been instrumental in the preservation and restoration of Berkeley landmark buildings by Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck.
He first learned "client-centered" design methods from the visionary
architect Bruce Goff, and has consistently applied it in his own practice.
