SPRING
2008 New classes start the week of April 7, 2008. Classes are to be held in West Berkeley,
California. In the event of delay in setting up the
new facilities,
3-unit classes: $350 each. 5-unit studio class: $550. Payment plans can be

MONDAY CLASSES E-99 ECO INVENTION 3 units. 6 weeks. Mondays, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. Class starts Monday, April 7, ends Monday, May 12. Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect; Director, SFIA.
Learn the most daring and successful green building innovations of our time and how to create your own innovative green design techniques. Includes how to make buildings that clean the air inside and outside, provide clean drinking water, grow food, process sewage, and produce clean energy that can also power emissions-free cars, trucks and manufacturing plants. D-1 STUDIO: CREATIVE DESIGN & NATURE-BASED ARCHITECTURE 5 units. 8 weeks. Mondays, 8:00 - 9:15+ p.m. Class starts Monday, April 7; ends Monday, May 26. Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect; Director, SFIA.
Total immersion in green building design, planning, and modeling. This studio continues D-1 from the Fall semester, but is also an excellent start point for beginners.
Nature-based building design is radically different from the process most design schools teach. This course demonstrates design methods as step-by-step procedures that eliminate any mystery about the process. Excellent for beginners, and eye- opening to experienced design professionals. TUESDAY CLASSES DE-170 ALTERNATIVE CONSTRUCTION
WITH 3 units. 6 weeks, plus one optional, weekend, hands-on workshop, to follow. Tuesdays, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. Class starts Tuesday, April 8, and ends Tuesday, May 13. Instructors: Marisha Farnsworth and Kevin Rowell of Kleiwerks and others to be announced.
Abundant natural and renewable materials can make great buildings. But you have to understand the nature and technology of earth, compressed earth brick, earth plasters, and the harvesting, preservation and extraordinary characteristics of bamboo. Marisha and Kevin are experts in their field and will provide a comprehensive introduction to the past and present best applications of these materials.
D-13 FREEHAND DRAWING AND NATURE DRAWING 3 units. 6 weeks. Tuesdays, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. Class starts Tuesday, April 8; ends Tuesday, May 13. Instructor: Ann Parenti, artist.
Anyone can learn to draw and draw well. But there are tricks to it. This class follows the groundbreaking techniques of Betty Edwards and her books: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook.
DE-150 SOLAR POWER 3 units. 6 weeks. Tuesdays, 8:00 - 9:15+ p.m. Class starts Tuesday, April 8; ends Tuesday, May 13. Instructor: Jerry Caldwell, Power Light.
The sun is likely to become the dominant source of electrical energy in our time. The history of solar power, design methods, technology, installation, and case studies. How solar panels work. Planning and installing solar systems in new and existing buildings. Best practices for keeping costs down without sacrificing quality. Tax credits, rebates, and other incentives. Architectural integration of solar panels. Drawings required for permitting and construction. A comprehensive "how-to" overview of one of today's most effective and well-tested solutions to the world's energy and petroleum problems.
WEDNESDAY CLASSES DE-350 EVOLUTIONARY ARCHITECTURE 3 units. 6 weeks. Wednesdays, 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. Class starts Wednesday, April 9; ends Wednesday, May 14. Instructor: Dr. Eugene Tsui, Architect.
Eugene Tsui deals with the world's larger environmental problems and how to design its solutions. "Design as if you were Nature," Says Eugene. This is a powerful principle that has made Eugene world famous as the most visionary nature-based architect of our time. It's a rare privilege to have him teach for us, so I hope you can take advantage of it. This semester will focus on the principles of biomimicry and nature's architecture. The course will include a series of hands-on charette projects, to demonstrate the essential principles of visionary nature-based architecture.
THURSDAY CLASS C-22 SKETCHUP: 3-D MODELING & DESIGN PROCESS 3 units. 6 weeks. Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:00+ p.m. Students may stay later for lab practice. Class starts Thursday, April 10; ends Thursday, May 15. Instructor: Dave Weir.
A comprehensive introduction to the lowest-cost and easiest- to-use architecture computer modeling program. SketchUp is now the leading medium for architectural perspective renderings and presentation drawings. Software can be downloaded at no cost. Bring your own laptop (required).
HOME STUDY

CERTIFICATION FOR GREEN BUILDING DESIGN PROFESSIONALS
Green building is about to become the most important environmental issue of our time.
The reason: Buildings account for most energy consumption (76%), most greenhouse gasses (48%), most overall pollution and landfill, and much of the increases in allergies and respiratory diseases (due to toxic materials and bad air handling systems).
Soon virtually all publicly-funded construction and most private construction will have to be designed to meet green standards and be certified by Green Building Professionals.
People qualified to design, certify, or construct green buildings are still a small minority in the design professions.
So the demand and opportunities for certified green building consultants are about to explode.
You can become a Certified Green Building Professional by completing 24 units of our design and green building classes through the Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall 2008 terms.
Green Building Design Professional certification will be through the SFIA and an accredited program of the Berkeley Institute of Ecological Design.
