The principles and technology of integrating sitework, landscape

and architecture, as taught by one of the nation's leading experts.

 

D-1 STUDIO

CREATIVE DESIGN PROCESS

& NATURE-BASED ARCHITECTURE

5 units. Mondays, 8:00 p.m. - 9:15 p.m.

Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect, Director, SFIA.

 

The techniques for designing nature-sensitive and humane

habitats are explained in detail in this course and demonstrated

through a variety of building design assignments.

 

C-11 INTRODUCTION TO AUTOCAD

Release 14 and R 2000

Instructor: Jeff McGrew, AutoCad practitioner.

 

A six-week introduction to the basics of the nation's dominant

computer-aided design and drafting program.

Instructor: David Deppen, Architect, Sim van der Ryn Architects.

 

Comprehensive and insightful course on eco-sensitive site analysis

and solar energy systems. Many details on the architectural importance

of geography, climate, botany, natural habitats, and history

give this course special relevance and impact.

 

D-39 ARCHITECTURE

& HUMAN BEHAVIOR

3 units, Tuesdays, 7:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Instructor: David Deppen, Architect, Sim van der Ryn Architects.

 

How people use and respond to the spaces around them.

Includes pattern language; defensible space; healing space;

design methods that are in sympathy with human emotion.

 

C-21 INTRODUCTION TO VECTORWORKS

Release 9

A six-week introduction to the basics of the user-friendly

Macintosh operating system, and the fundamentals of architectural

design drawing and production drawing, using the popular

and easy-to-learn VectorWorks program.

T- 1 CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

& METHODS

3 units. Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.

Introduction to construction technology and engineering, with

emphasis on the causes and prevention of failures in design,

materials, and construction, plus the latest information on

preventing problems in ecological design.

 

D-6 HISTORY & THEORY

OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

3 units. Wednesdays, 7:45 p.m. - 9:15 p.m.

Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect, Director, SFIA.

 

The secrets of design as practiced by Gothic, Renaissance,

Baroque, and Neoclassical architects,

followed by the revolutions in design method of Art Nouveau,

Antonio Gaudi, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Bruce Goff.

Includes an overview of contemporary architecture of all types and the

latest work of contemporary organic, visionary

and nature-based architects.

 

D-21 MATHEMATICS & GEOMETRY

FOR CREATIVE DESIGN

Knowledge of the inner geometry of nature is

essential for the creation of

integrity and beauty in every aspect of design.

E-9 LEED 1

EXAM PREPARATION WORKSHOP

3 units. Six weeks, starting March 10, ending April 14.

Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.

Instructor: SFIA staff and LEED-accredited professionals.

 

"LEED" (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation

is a tested certification of one's ability to consult and design energy-

efficient buildings. This course will prepare students

to take the official LEED accreditation exam.

E-10 LEED 2

LEED-BASED BUILDING DESIGN

& DESIGN COMPETITIONS

3 units. Six weeks, starting April 21, ending May 26.

Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.

Instructor: SFIA staff and LEED-accredited professionals.

 

Learn how to express eco design principles and presentation

skills, through mentored opportunities to enter

student eco design competitions.

 

 

D-12 MEDIA STUDIO

PRESENTATION SKILLS

& DESIGN COMPETITIONS

5 units Thursdays, 8:00 p.m. - 9:15 p.m.

Instructor: David Waldorf

 

Learn computer graphic design and rendering skills in Sketchup,

PhotoShop, and Adobe Illustrator.

Emphasis on presentation skills, and support for entering

real-world design competitions.

DE-11THE MORTGAGE-FREE,

AUTONOMOUS HOUSE

3 units. First meeting, Friday, March 11, 6:30 p.m. - 7:40 p.m.

Subsequent meetings will be online

and at SFIA at students' convenience.

Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect, Director, SFIA

 

Introduction during the first D-7 public lecture -- a directed

research seminar rather than lecture format -- to compile all

relevant information on how to build a prototype home that

eliminates the need for outside energy, fuel for heating or cooling,

water hookup, and sewer;

minimal outlay of construction materials;

and an interior garden to process waste and grow food.

 

D-7 STUDIES IN ECOLOGICAL DESIGN

& ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE

3 units for independent study.

SFIA speaker series.

Free for noncredit. Fridays, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

 

Guest architects and ecological design experts tell what they do

and how they do it. Speaker list and schedule will be posted

prior to the first week of classes.

 

D-16 SKETCH IN THE CITY

5 units Fridays, 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Instructor: David Waldorf.

Meetings at designated city locations.

 

On-site freehand sketching at notable San Francisco sites.

A thoroughly pleasant, energizing, and eye-opening experience

for developing your freehand drawing skills.

Pencil, pen, pastel media.

The art and technology of creating durable and

beautiful earthen flooring.

Includes experiments in earth construction

enhancement and finishes.

Creating a demonstration display of straw bale wall

construction, with varied natural plaster finishes.

How to build with one of the world's lightest, strongest, and most

versatile construction materials.

 

EW-14 Workshop Four

Creating an

Ecological Design Exhibit

1 unit. 3-week workshop course,

Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., May 14 - May 28, 2005.

 

Create a vivid exhibit of ecological design principles and examples

to show during World Environment Week in San Francisco.

The exhibit will be designed to be duplicated and shipped

for display at other schools.

principles and techniques of architectural
