FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR

Fred Stitt, Architect, former instructor in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. Editor/Publisher, Guidelines. Author of Designing Buildings That Work, Systems Graphics, Systems Drafting, The Design Office Management Handbook, Room Design Standards, Project Management, Predesign & Planning, The Architect's Detail Library, and many other manuals, newsletters, and related publications on architectural practice. Raised in Los Angeles, Fred moved to Oklahoma to study with Bruce Goff at the University of Oklahoma. He then worked for a wide variety of architects, including Polo Soleri in Arizona, Edward Stone in New York, Reid & Tarics in San Francisco and many others. In 1968 he entered the University of California at Berkeley and wrote a series of research papers on the dominant problems of professional practice. Since then he has written and published over fifty manuals on "problems and solutions" in architecture, and lectures extensively on these subjects for architectural audiences across the U.S. Through these years of research and writing, Fred's long-term goal has been to create an experimental school dedicated to the study and solution of problems in design education. That school, founded in 1990, is the SFIA.
